Rusty Gate Challenge

50km | 21km | 12km

The Routes:

50km with 2 500m elevation
A pure mountain ultra that winds through pristine fynbos in the upper parts of the Sonderend mountain range and faster flat tracks through fruit orchards at the foot of the mountains with a combination of single track and gravel trails through deep gorges and over rocky crests. Undulating sections offer a welcome rest for the legs and give the racing snakes an opportunity to make up ground. There will be four hydration stations along this route, at 15km, 25km, 35km and 45km, and an eight hour cutoff at the 35km hydration station.

Reviews:

The 50km route was tested by four intrepid runners on 23 September 2023, one of the wettest weekends recorded in the area, and this is what they had to say:

“You are all amazing for letting us experience this – the organising and hospitality exceeds anything I’ve ever experienced – a huge thank you!!!! The weather made it even more memorable.  Looking forward to many yearly reunions”
Mags Wright

“Thanks everybody WHAT A DAY!!!!! These are the days we live for and will always remember. Appreciate all the support”
Morne van Greunen

“I do not know how to express my gratitude for everything that was done today. It was the most special run I have done in my life. The hospitality, route marking, pristine trails is something I will always remember. Thank thank thank you that I could be a part of this day. Rusty Gate is one special place.”
Manfred Venter

“What a treat it was to explore the beautiful trails around Rusty Gate, especially in the last quarter with the great decent into and climb out of the spectacular waterfall ravine. The organisation from the local events team and hospitality from the property owners makes this a truly unique and special event.” Andrew King

Greyton Trail Running Society is known for community-led events with big ‘gees’ in big mountains. The Rusty Gate Challenge is a trail running event with loads of both.
